Dry Zone and Alcohol Restrictions

Dry Zone

In an effort to reduce alcohol related antisocial behaviour within the Council area, a Dry Zone has been in place since 1988.

The Dry Zone encompases the township of Ceduna and Thevenard, click here to view a map of the Dry Zone.

Alcohol Restrictions

The Ceduna District Council, South Australian Police and local alcohol licencees and the Office of the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner value the health, wellbeing and safety of all residents and visitors to the region.  The responsible service, sale and consumption of alcohol is important in achieving this, and a range of initiatives have been introduced.  These include the introduction of Dry Areas, restrictions on sales of certain types of alcohol and the recent introduction of the ID Tect machines.

The townships of Ceduna and Thevenard have been Dry Areas since 1988.  This means that no-one can drink alcohol in a public place within the Ceduna and Thevenard town boundaries.

ID Tect machines are installed in all takeaway alcohol outlets in Ceduna, Thevenard and Smoky Bay.  Any person wishing to purchase alcohol is required to produce an approved form of photo identification and this will be scanned.

Once the photo identification is scanned in the ID Tech system, information is provided to staff about whether the person purchasing takeaway alcohol has a barring order in place and should not be supplied with alcohol.

The ID Tech system also assists with the management of restrictions on the sales of certain alcohol products.

The following forms of Photo Identification will be accepted:

  • Drivers Licence
  • Passport
  • Proof of Age Card
  • Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC Card)
  • Port User Card

If you are unable to provide one of the types of acceptable Photo Identification above you will not be able to purchase takeaway alcohol.
